Pressure at the puck is what matters, and most pumps are regulated down to around 9 bar at the group. A 20 bar rating describes the pump's maximum, not the extraction pressure. The basket, grind, and dose have more effect on the cup than the pump ceiling.
A steam wand uses a tip to inject steam into milk for microfoam, giving control over texture. A frother may be a separate device or a panarello sleeve that aerates milk with less technique. Both appear on 20 bar machines in this slice.
Some models accept ground coffee in a portafilter basket, and at least one sample is built for original-style pods. The basket type determines what you can load. Check whether the machine ships with a pressurized or non-pressurized basket for the coffee you plan to use.
Widths vary from compact single-cup units to wider machines with a steam wand and hot water wand. Height must clear the cup and portafilter handle. Tank capacity between 1.2L and 2.8L affects depth as well as refill frequency.
A 20 bar espresso machine uses a pump rated to push water at that pressure through a compacted bed of coffee. The group head, portafilter, and basket are built to hold that pressure during the shot. These machines sit above lower-pressure pump designs in the pressure they can sustain at the puck.
The pressure is generated by a vibration or rotary pump inside the housing. Water travels from a reservoir through the pump, into a boiler or thermoblock, then to the group. The steam wand or frother runs on a separate circuit from the brew path.
Water tanks on these machines range from 1.2L to 2.8L. A smaller tank means more frequent refills; a larger tank suits longer sessions or multiple drinks. Removable tanks allow emptying and rinsing away from the machine.
Housings are mostly stainless steel or stainless with black or colored panels. Colors observed include green, brown, gray, black, and red. Footprints vary from narrow upright towers to wider units with a cup warming surface on top.
